Administering the Microsoft Ecosystem: A Pathway Of Chaos

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes… and Microsoft renaming something you just finally understood.

I didn’t choose this life. I just wanted to reset passwords and maybe spin up a VM or two. Let’s talk about the experience of administering the Microsoft ecosystem, also known as “Where Am I and Why Is This Here?”

Chapter 1: The Portal Multiverse

You’d think there would be one place to manage everything. That’s adorable.

Instead, Microsoft gives you an entire cinematic universe of portals:

• Microsoft 365 Admin Center
• Entra Admin Center
• Azure Portal
• Exchange Admin Center
• Teams Admin Center
• SharePoint Admin Center
• Intune Admin Center
• Security / Defender / Purview… (pick your flavor)

And the best part?
They’re all kind of linked together… except when they aren’t.

You click a setting in one portal, it opens another portal, which opens a blade in a third portal, which politely informs you that setting has moved to a different portal.

This is not administration.
This is orbital navigation.

Chapter 2: The Great Renaming Initiative

Once upon a time, there was Azure Active Directory.

Simple. Clear. Everyone knew it. Life was good.

Then one day Microsoft said:
“What if we renamed it… but didn’t actually change anything?”

Meanwhile, in the real world:

Step 1: Go to Azure AD
Step 2: Sorry, we mean Entra
Step 3: Actually open the Microsoft 365 Admin Center
Step 4: Click a link that takes you back to Azure

Chapter 6: Acceptance (The Final Stage)

At some point, every Microsoft admin reaches enlightenment.

You stop asking:

• “Why are there so many portals?”
• “Why did they rename this?”
• “Where did that setting go?”

And you start saying:

• “Yeah, that moved.”
• “Use the other portal.”
• “No, the other other portal.”

You embrace it.

You build bookmarks.
You memorize URLs.
You develop a sixth sense for where Microsoft probably hid something this time.

Short answer: It doesn’t.

And yet…

We keep doing it.
